MOFCOM hosted the 30th Anniversary Celebration for International and Bilateral Development Assistance to China and the 1st Anniversary Celebration for International Aid to“5.12”Wenchuan Earthquake-Hit Area on May 11. Over 30 diplomatic envoys from UNDP, UNICEF and UNFPA and donor countries of EU, UK, Germany and Australia attended the celebration. About 100 representatives from relevant ministries under the State Council and provinces and autonomous regions were also present at the celebration. Those who made speech were Minister of Commerce Chen Deming, UN Resident Coordinator Khalid Malik, EU Ambassador to China Serge Abou, Deputy Minister of Environmental Protection Li Ganjie, and Jiang Xianji, Adviser to Government of Sichuan Province. Yi Xiaozhun, Deputy Minister of Commerce, and Qiu Hong, Assistant Minister of Commerce were also present at the celebration.
On June 29, 1976, China signed a technology cooperation agreement with the UNDP, and development assistance to China by the United Nations organizations commenced. On October 2, 1981, China and Australia signed a technology cooperation agreement, the first of its kind, which marked the beginning of China accepting bilateral aid from developed countries. Over the past 30 years, China has made fruitful development cooperation with more than 20 international organizations and governments, including UNDP, UNICEF, EU, Japan, Germany, Australia and Canada in about 30 fields, such as poverty alleviation, environmental protection, education, health, structural reform and energy, etc. Total international aid gratis China has received is close to US$ 6.7 billion. About 2000 programs were implemented.
